Background and Objective: Raising a child with an intellectual disability poses significant challenges for mothers, often leading to diminished psychological well-being, strained parent-child relationships, and reduced confidence in parenting abilities. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a positive parenting program in enhancing the quality of parent-child interactions and bolstering parental self-efficacy among mothers of children with intellectual disabilities.
Methods: A quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest and follow-up assessments, including a control group, was employed. Conducted in 2024, the study targeted mothers of children with intellectual disabilities within a defined geographical region. A convenience sample of 32 mothers was randomly allocated to an experimental group (n=16) or a control group (n=16). The experimental group participated in an 8-session positive parenting program, while the control group received no intervention. Data were gathered using the Parent-Child Relationship Scale and the Parental Self-Efficacy Scale.  Repeated measures analysis of variance was utilized to evaluate changes over time and differences between groups.
Findings: Statistical analysis revealed significant improvements in parent-child relationships and parental self-efficacy in the experimental group compared to the control group (P<0.01). These findings suggest that the positive parenting program effectively enhanced mother-child interactions and strengthened maternal confidence in parenting capabilities.
Conclusion: The positive parenting program proved effective in improving parent-child relationships and parental self-efficacy among mothers of children with intellectual disabilities. These results underscore the potential for targeted interventions to empower mothers and foster nurturing family environments, with significant implications for clinical practice and program development.
